1. Pilikuttuwa Raja Maha Viharaya

Pilikuttuwa Raja Maha Viharaya is an ancient Cave temple situated in Mahara of Gampaha, Sri Lanka and this temple has been declared as one of archaeological site in Sri Lanka Pilikuttuwa Raja Maha Vihara is considered as one of the Buddhist temple with highest number of drip ledged rock caves in Sri Lanka.

It is said that this temple has 99 rock caves with drip ledges, spread Lout 200 acres of total area. As of today, 77 caves have been identified and their numbers are marked on each cave. Besides the rock caves, a number of water tanks with underground water channels, a large number of Ola leaf manuscripts, paintings of the Kandyan era, and an old wooden bridge with Dutch architectural features can be found in the vihara premises.

As the archaeological evidence, it is believed that this area was inhabited since pre-historic time periods. Also, three rock inscriptions with Brahmi characters, found in the caves in vihar premises prove that Pilikuththuwa temple exists as a religious place since the pre-Christian era. The legends connected with this temple describe King Valagamba (89-77 BC) used to stay in this historical place from time to time during the invasion from South India.

2. Uruwala Valagamba Raja Maha Vihara

Uruwala Valagamba Raja Maha Vihara is an ancient Buddhist temple in the Sri Lankan town of Uruwala. The temple is on Wathurugama road, about 4.71 kilometers from Miriswatta junction. The government of Sri Lanka has legally designated the temple as an archaeological site.

3. Maligatenna Rajamaha Viharaya

Maligatenna Raja Maha Vihara is an ancient Cave temple which is located in Malwatuhiripitiya village, Gampaha District, Sri Lanka, and this temple has been recognized as an archaeological protected site in Gampaha District by the Archaeological department. The history of Maligathenna Raja Maha Vihara is believed to go back to the time period of the Anuradhapura Kingdom.

According to Brahmi cave inscriptions found in Warana Raja Maha Vihara and Pilikutthuwa Raja Maha Vihara, those are temple located near Maligatenna, it can be assumed that this vihara may also have been an abode of Buddhist monks. There is two main folklore that describes how this temple became an important place for kings and their ministers during the enemy invasion periods.

According to the first folklore, this temple is considered one of the places that King Valagamba used to hide during the Chola invasions in Anuradhapura As the other folklore, this vihara was the first place where the tooth relic of Buddha was hidden for safety (before being carried to Delgamuwa Raja Maha Vihara) when King Don Juan Dharmapala of Kotte kingdom embraced Christianity during the Portuguese period here are a number of rock caves with drip ledges are found in the vihara premises.

In one of them, an engraved stone door frame can be seen. According to the view of professor Senarath Paranavithana the door frame may belong to the period of the 8th century of A.D

4. Varana Rajamaha Viharaya

The temple is mainly consist of three levels as Pahala maluwa, Meda maluwa and Ihala maluwa. In the first level the Sangawasaya and the Dharama Hall is located and in the middle level the drip-ledged cave temple with its ancient Stupa can be seen.

It is said that stupa is around 800 years old. Inside the cave temple many of Buddha statues and paintings are found. The canopy of the cave has been decorated with lotus flowers and with various other flower designs. In the top level another Stupa and Cave temple can be seen.
